My Letter To Applebees

"To Whom It May Concern,

I am normally not one to complain, but a recent visit to Applebees was so horrible that it leaves me with no choice. I would like to preface with saying I am not looking for a free gift, I am not looking for a free meal. I am writing to let you know that I, nor my friends, will ever visit Applebees in Torrington, CT again. Furthermore, I feel it is my obligation to spread this opinion throughout my network of colleagues, coworkers, and acquaintances in this town, of which I have many. In my humble opinion, Applebees in Torrington needs to be shut down.

The night started with an entire beverage spilled on my lap. The server, obviously new and not trained, handled the situation with little confidence and experience. I do not have a problem with this, my problem instead lies with management and their complete disregard to the situation at hand. My friend was left to find a trash receptacle to help clean (it was a large mess) and there was zero acknowledgment from management. We had a $3.00 comp on the bill.

The second instance came when my friend was given an incorrect beverage order. When he mentioned the mistake, he was assured the correction would be made on our bill. The correction was not made, we were charged twice for the mistake even after verbal confirmation from our server that it would be taken care of.

We waited at our table for nearly two hours before being served our meal. On occasion, our server mentioned to us 'your food will be out any second.' One hour and forty minutes later, it arrived. Coincidentally, we as a group had decided seconds before that we were going to leave. I wish we had.

The food was sub par at best. I don't want to focus on the quality of food, because that is simply opinion. However stale bread and things of that nature are not satisfactory, and that is what we received.

The worst part of the evening came when we mentioned our troubles to the manager. We did not receive an apology, but instead were reprimanded for 'not bringing this up earlier.' This is not our responsibility. Furthermore, I don't know how much more obvious it can be when an entire beverage spills on a customer. But I digress, and would instead like to really focus on the lack of apology, as well as the manner in which we, as paying customers, were treated by management.

I work as Vice President of Operations in my business. My friend is a General manager at another very large restaurant chain throughout the east coast. We know what to expect, and we know when to draw a line. I felt that we were treated as children, and told that we were wrong for all of the shortcomings that happened.

I want to reiterate that I am not looking for a free meal. I do not want my money back. I am simply making you aware that the operation in Torrington is absolutely pathetic. Tonight was not the only bad experience I have had, it just happened to be the worst. As I mentioned, not only will I not be returning, but I am going to make my opinion very well known to the people of this town. I would hope that no one has to have the same experience we did this evening.

Sincerely,

Jed A. Scattergood"
